Keg cleaning day!

I kind of feel like a sheriff that just shot the last bullet in his gun right now.  All of my kegs have run empty so I need to get brewing again!  Know that this day was quickly approaching, I have been giving some thought to what I would refill my home brewing kegs with and here is my plan so far for my four potential kegs.

Beer Tap #1: An easy drinking beer, either a blonde ale, pilsner, American wheat, lager, session pale, brown ale or Oktoberfest style beer.

Beer Tap #2: An IPA, Double IPA or Hazy IPA.  I have been craving hazy IPA’s lately so I will more than likely go that route.

Beer Tap #3: Something dark and robust, either a Porter, Stout or Russian Imperial Stout. Perhaps even a Russian Imperial Coffee Stout!

Beer Tap #4: This will be my rotator beer. Currently I have a cider fermenting in the fridge, so that will fall in to this 4th slot for now, but after that I will fill it with seasonal favorites and experimental beers.

Hopefully I can fit a brew day in over the next week or two!

Cleaning the stainless steel conical fermenter

I have been brewing for quite a while now and over the years I have purchased a lot of home beer brewing equipment.  This 7 gallon stainless steel conical fermenter may be my best home brew purchase.  Initially when I started out home brewing, I was fermenting in 6 gallon glass carboys.  I would use two of them, one for primary fermentation and the other for secondary fermentation.  They were heavy, took up a lot of space, were difficult to move around, did not shield my homebrew from light, were a pain in the ass to clean and I had broken at least 2 of them over the years when they either cracked or the top sheared off when coming in contact with the ground.  Worst of all was knowing that if I had dropped one while relocating it that I was probably in for a trip to the hospital because those broken fragments of glass are sharper than knives.

This SSBrewTech conical fermenter on the other hand is honestly the perfect fermentation vessel for home beer brewing in my opinion.  It holds 7 gallons of fermenting beer, wine or cider; which is the perfect size for a 5 gallon batch.  It allows you to both dump trub and harvest yeast via its large 1.5″ valve at the conical base, it has a rotating racking arm, which I upgraded to MoreBeer’s ultimate racking arm. That is an upgrade that I would highly recommend.

It does not allow light to come in contact with your home brew, you can conduct CO2 transfers to eliminate any contact with oxygen, comes with a thermowell for temperature regulation, fits in most chest freezers (if you reduce the leg size) and is incredible easy to clean. In addition to that it is inexpensive for a high end piece of stainless steel home brewing equipment.  MoreBeer currently has them on sale for just $399 and they ship for free! If you are looking to buy a stainless steel conical fermenter, they can be purchased here.

I have been using mine for I think right about 2 1/2 years now and it has been worth every penny that I paid for it.  It is high quality and the handles on the side are welded strong, so I never need to worry about one busting off, even when it is fully loaded!

Cleaning kegs in preparation for the next batch of homebrew!

Based on my estimated, home beer making is about 75% brewing and 25% cleaning.  I had recently drained a couple of kegs so today it is time for me to clean them and my taps in preparation for my experimental Oktoberfest Ale and my next to be determined batch of homebrew.  Thankfully for home brewers, there are cleaning solutions out there like PBW home brewing clean that can help with the job.

How to clean a keg

My keg cleaning process is pretty simple. I place a keg tap head on the output post of the keg, so that the dip tube of the keg can pass fluid, I then flush the keg post and dip tube with water and rice any yeast, trub or particulates from the keg.  After doing that 2 to 3 times until the keg is visibly clean, I add in a scoop of PBW and fill the keg up to the rim with PBW solution. I then allow it to sit for at least an hour.  I then flush the keg and dip tube again and inspect the keg.  At this point I may or may not remove the posts for a more complete cleaning and run a brush through the dip tube.  I then spray sanitize the kegs for storage.

If you need home brewing cleaner, I highly recommend PBW ( Powdered Brewery Wash).  It is fantastic.  Whatever you do, do not use household dish soap unless you have no other choice.  I dish washing detergent would be a better choice.  For a food grade sanitizer I recommend star san.  They both can be purchased via the following link at a great price!

Cleaning the keg and tap lines

Not fun but you got to do it, cleaning the tap lines. #homebrew #homebrewing. I broke down the beer tap and soaked it in PBW. Then I cleaned all the lines with line cleaner and reassemble. #home #brewing

Just about any good home brewer will tell you that one of the first rules of home brewing beer and making good home brewed beer is cleanliness. Unfortunately humans are not the only beer lovers on the planet.  Beer is loved by everything from insects to bacteria and your homebrewing and keg systems are highly susceptible to bacterial growth. Beer lines, keg fittings and taps are often times places where the like to hang out and they should be cleaned regularly.  Thankfully there are several products out there to help you keep your systems sanitary and your beer tasting good!

After building my Kegerator setup which you can view here, I knew that I would need to care for it and clean my taps so I purchased the line cleaning kit and some liquid beer line cleaner which is shown above.  The kit was great, it came with instructions and everything that I needed in order to do the job. The beer keg line cleaning kit came with a 1 quart hand pump that pushes Beer Line Cleaner through the draft beer system. The faucet gets removed and cleaned with the included faucet wrench and brush.  The process is relatively quick and easy and takes about 20 minutes to clean a couple beer taps out.

If you are interest in purchasing a draft beer line cleaning kit you can find it here:

Keg Line Cleaning Solution

Here are the detailed instructions on how to clean your keg beer lines, beer taps and beer faucets:

1) Remove the tap from the keg. Use a beer faucet wrench to remove the faucet (the piece that the beer actually flows though to your glass) from the draft beer shank. The beer faucet collar should have a few holes in it, insert the wrench end into a hole and spin the collar clockwise to remove.

2) Next, disassemble the faucet to the point that the shaft inside can slide out. Place these parts in a bowl with 2 cups of warm water and ¼ teaspoon of Beer Line Cleaner. Put one cap full of beer line cleaner into the beer line pump jar and fill with warm water. Attach the lid pump unit back on the jar. Get a bucket to collect the fluid running from the tap. Insert the cleaning brush small end into the bottom of the tap to allow the flow to go through if needed.

3) Pump the cleaning solution though line and tap allowing the solution to sit in the lines for 10–15 minutes, then pump through. Follow this with 1–2 jars of water to rinse. Remove the brush from the tap.

4) Use the brush and a towel to clean the draft beer faucet and then rinse with clean water. Reassemble the faucet, hand tighten parts, leave loose enough so that they move freely. Attach the faucet back onto the shank again, using the wrench, do not over tighten, just tighten enough so that it does not leak any precious beer!

Final Cleaning of the Brewrig

Doing the final cleaning of the home brewing system.  After cleaning out all of the kettles and the chiller, I fill a bucket and throw in a scoop of PBW. I enable the RIMS system and have it circulate the water and PBW in the bucket.  I bring the water temp up to about 1ooF happens pretty quickly since it is only about 3 gallons of water.  I let it circulate for about 5 minutes once I have hit my desired temperature and let the PBW do its magic.  After that I break down the homebrewing RIMS system scrub everything, reassemble and flush with clean water.
